About Ilura Press

Founded in 2006, Ilura Press is an independent boutique publisher based in Melbourne. Our aim is to provide an avenue for creative work through the publication of quality literature and art. We are run by a dedicated team of writers and artists, and rely on interns and volunteers, supporters, and funding to produce our titles.

We have a select publishing list, taking on a handful of unique and inspiring projects each year. We work closely with our authors throughout the editing and production stages to ensure their vision and the work itself realise their full potential. We strive for quality in both content and production.

Included in our publishing list is the acclaimed creative journal, Etchings, which showcases new work by emerging and established writers and artists. Established writers who have graced the pages of Etchings include J.M. Coetzee, Kevin Brophy, Robert Dessaix, Alice Pung, Antoni Jach, Tom Shapcott, Emily Ballou, John Tranter, Sallie Muirden, and others.

The emblem for Ilura Press is based on Cycladic artefacts dating as far back as 2700 BC. They have come to represent not only the spirit of that time and region, but the very beginning of Western Art. The spirit that exists within these, often very small, marble sculptures has been a source of fascination for many people. The complexity behind the simplicity, and their ability to convey a unique aspect of humanity, directly inspired artists such as Modigliani and Picasso. And they have come to inspire us at Ilura Press: the female figure with folded arms represents the source of creative energy and fertility every writer and artist taps into.
